Managed Services: The New IT Buzzword

There's a new buzzword in the world of IT maintenance, and it's "Managed Services." Hailed as the newest, cheapest way to get computer maintenance, Managed Services providers offer one flat rate, unlimited service, and remote access to take care of issues from afar. It's supposed to be a great deal and great service.

Well, you can't believe all of the hype, especially if you're a Mac user. If you've gotten a call from a "Managed Services Provider," they'll tell you that you can get all of your IT needs taken care of for a fraction of the price. But that low cost comes with a price of its own: locking down your network.

Many Managed Services Providers (MSPs) make their money by forcing you to work within a very limited network. You can't install new devices, software, or utilities. Do you want FTP software? Sorry, you'll have to call your MSP and pay them to give you the password. If you have severe problems, they press a button and completely wipe your system and install a new one. Hardly elegant solutions. For many Mac users, it's simply an unacceptable way of working.

Still, there are some great things about Managed Services. MSPs provide more remote services than traditional IT providers and do updates overnight or while you're not at the computer. That means that you can have less ongoing troubles and faster response times when you have problems.

At Tech Superpowers, we've been watching the Managed Service craze with intense interest, and we think that our newest service offering - Managed Macs - is the best of both worlds. Not only does Managed Macs provide remote support, automatic updates, and fast response, but we do so without having to lock down your network or wipe your computer at the slightest hint of trouble. We even have developed our own special remote application to help our techs get access to your machine, even if it's behind a firewall.

Our pricing is more affordable than a purely onsite model, and onsite options are available for those extra tough issues that can't be resolved remotely. Be warned, however, the Managed Service model isn't for everyone. It's for companies that don't leverage IT extensively as a competitive edge, but rather just want to keep things running as cheaply as possible.
